March 8, 2014—All right, let's put the cards on the table. Who hasn't wondered what would happen if you got lost—really lost—in the woods? Or if your car broke down on some stupid back road in the mountains on a freezing night? Maybe you're just curious about how Otzi the iceman and his ilk survived on treks through the mountains in harsh conditions.

Now imagine knowing that you could—no matter what the circumstances—build a shelter to keep you dry and a fire to keep you warm. Imagine also bragging to your friends on Monday that you made a friction fire ("rubbing two sticks together," as we used to call it) over the weekend and learned to build a rudimentary snare while they were doing yard work. Who's the adventurer here, hm?

This Saturday, March 8, Adventure Out is offering a screaming deal to Hilltrompers: $50 off its Wilderness Survival Clinic. A $125 value, this 5-hour class is taught by certified wilderness instructors (there is such a thing) and teaches you the basics of surviving in nature like our ancestors did for millennia. If you like it, you can go on to the Immersion Overnight Class, where you actually sleep in that shelter you built and learn even more skills, like how to identify and harvest edible wild foods.

"You're the direct descendants of people who had these skills," Adventure Out's Cliff Hodges told a basic wilderness skills class I attended a few years ago. It sounded good then and it sounds good now.
