The Biggest Global Organization Working to Save the Seas The oceans are in crisis, according to Oceana, an international organization established in 2001 to alleviate overfishing, acidification and habitat destruction in our oceans. With offices all over the world, Oceana's reach is global. Recent victories include helping sea turtles gain protections from scallop dredges in the Atlantic, petitioning to protect manta rays from being made into leather by asking to take them off of their product list, and finalizing protection of 40,000 square miles of ocean habitat for the endangered leatherback sea turtle off the shores of Washington, Oregon and California.
