For a good part of a decade there wasn’t much innovation with running shoes, until everyone went wild over the minimalist trend. That’s when Hoka One One (based in the Bay Area) came on to the scene and introduced a more maximal concept. This was a nice remedy to many of the injuries resulting from minimalist design.
For distance trail runners, the Rapa Nui provides lightweight cushioning in a more stable shape, which is great for the pounding of steep downhills as well as rocky, uneven terrain. The “balanced stage Meta-Rocker” is designed to increase the economy of running performance for an accurate foot roll through the gait cycle.
The heel-to-toe offset is set at 5mm, so you can still get that responsive running experience but with the protection the foot needs. The upper is constructed with a breathable mesh, to keep air circulating and prevent moisture build up. MSRP: $85
