Solar Lighthouse

March 3, 2013—Sandbar Solar and Electric, a local company that's been installing commercial and residential systems here and throughout the state since 2004, uses an image of Lighthouse Point on its website and in its other materials. That's gotta be why Scott Laskey, Sandbar's president, just gave the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum, which is housed in the lighthouse, a $10,000 solar-power system.

The Sentinel today reports that according to the Parks and Rec Department, the rooftop solar panels could cut the Museum's power bill by 80 percent.

Laskey points out that there's symbolic value as well: "It's the symbol for the city of Santa Cruz," Laskey said. "It's an identity for the city, both culturally and physically. I think that solarizing the lighthouse fits right into the culture of sustainability in Santa Cruz."
