Will Work for Serenity

Tags:

March 27, 2013—Ever since we learned about the Tassajara Work Period, we can think of little else. From April 5 until April 26, the rustic Big Sur retreat opens its gates to anyone who wants to trade six-and-a-half hours of work per day for room and board. That includes tasty vegetarian meals, optional morning and evening meditation sessions and all the quality soaking time in the Japanese bath house you can handle. Carpenters, gardeners, painters, plumbers, electricians, cooks and cleaners are invited to help get the retreat in shape for the guest season (April 26–Sept. 9). Another work period is scheduled for Sept. 10-23, after the guest season has ended.

Located in a remote pocket of the magnificent Ventana Wilderness, the Tassajara hot springs have long been known as a place of healing. The center is accessible only via a 14-mile dirt road. Part of the San Francisco Zen Center, Tassajara emphasizes serenity and has only limited electricity, so don't plan on catching up on your email at night.

The minimum stay is seven days. Call 831.659.2229 to register. Phones are answered 8:30am - noon and 1pm - 4:30pm Monday - Friday.
