Gerbera Daisy Benefit for Friends

Sat, 06/20/2015 - 10:00

Kitayama Brothers presents the sixth annual Gerbera Festival, a celebration of all flowers, produce and especially the pert, colorful gerbera daisy.

Kitayama is the largest grower of gerberas in northern California, and each year they replant one-third of their crop, digging up the 3-year-old plants and selling them for a song ($5-10). Look for a flower arranging competition at 11am, in which professional flower designers work under pressure to create bouquets that will be for sale during the silent auction. Other attractions include tours of the Kitayama greenhouses, a wine tasting with Storrs Winery, a Strawberry Shortcake Cafe, kids' activities and a farmers market featuring locally grown produce and gifts. You might also join in Will Gonzalez's 1:30pm workshop, "How to Optimize a Grocery Store Bouquet" (cost: $25), which will show you how to make the most of those simple little last-minute flower bunches. Proceeds from the festival benefit Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, which supports state parks in this area through an innovative model of partnership.

Kitayama Brothers, 481 San Andreas Rd, Watsonville (next to Sunset State Beach). 10am-4pm. Entrance is free. Learn more at kitayamabrothers.com and montereybayfarmtours.org.
