Protectors of Giants The gray whale is the world’s oldest baleen whale alive today. Every year around October, these majestic creatures leave their arctic feeding grounds to migrate south towards their birthing grounds in Mexico. They are often sighted passing through Monterey Bay. The 2014 migration saw a major increase in numbers. However, major threats to the gray whale remain, including military sonar, seismic surveys and entanglement.
