Making Small Farms Stronger Small family farms are an integral part of a sustainable community. The Community Alliance with Family Farmers is a Watsonville-based organization that strives to build shared values around agricultural practices and food. Partnerships between family farmers and their communities generate economic vitality and improved health—for both the environment and the humans who depend on the products of local farms.
CAFF is made up of farmers and urban activists who have been working together for over 30 years. It encompasses 1,000 growers, 500 businesses and 1 million “eaters.” Their “Farm to School” program introduces young people to where their food comes from, teaching them nutrition as well as food justice and the role of agriculture in environmentally and socially sustainable communities. Farm to School also brings fresh, local food into school cafeterias near you.
