March 18, 2016—It's not a bad wall. It does its job. It holds up the hillside, saving pedestrians and motorists from death or inconvenience. It's just that it could be a better wall—one that is pretty to look at, one that hints that a beautiful historic park lies just steps away, up the enchanted secret staircase leading up the hill. That is where Santa Cruz County's artistes come in.
Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks is holding a mural design contest for the wall, which faces Mission Street between Cedar and Emmett, about a block west of the Town Clock. The mural should be about the Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park, also known as the Mission Adobe, and mention the park's name. This is the long adobe structure on School Street (not the replica mission on Emmett Street). It would not be so bad (but it is not required) if the design referenced the 25th anniversary of the state park, which is celebrated this summer.
The mural will be installed in tesserae—small colorful tiles—by the artist Kathleen Crocetti, whose work you'll recognize from the Water Street, Soquel and Laurel bridges and from the Tannery, with help from Mission Hill Middle School students. This will be a highly visible mural (fame!) done well (satisfaction!) and for a good reason: to help people find their way to a magical state park right downtown (purpose!).
Contest is open to residents of Santa Cruz County. Designs are due by 5pm on Sunday, March 27. Winner receives a $500 cash prize. Learn more and download the application.
