Santa Cruz-based filmmakers Karen and Kennan Ward have filmed wildlife all over the world, but this time they turned the lens on Big Sur. Over the course of six years, with the use of special cameras able to capture extremely fast movements, they amassed stunning footage of some of the animals that call Big Sur home: hummingbirds, a one-eyed bobcat who had to teach herself to hunt anew and a family of condors. "This region is one of the most biologically diverse we have filmed," the filmmakers say in a bio. Another star of the film is Big Sur-style mountain man Feynnar Arias, native of Costa Rica and longtime caretaker of the University of California's Big Creek Preserve.
This event sells out, so snap up tickets now! Proceeds benefit the UC's Landels Hill Big Creek Preserve (you can read about recent bat research there); Ventana Wilderness Alliance, which maintains trails in Big Sur and gives kids their first taste of the wilderness; and the Ventana Wildlife Society, which is reintroducing the California condor to Big Sur.
