There's so much more to statistical modeling than meets the eye. Lush, moist numbers, throbbing formulae and wickedly sensual margins all combine to create a playground for the intellectual libertine who fears commitment to computer modeling.
OK, not really, but in this month's edition of Science on Tap, Dr. Herbert Lee of the UCSC Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department will explain what statistical modeling is and how it provides a cheaper but pretty darn effective alternative to computer modeling when it comes to working out solutions to real-world problems like health care policy and groundwater contamination. This is a talk for normal people (i.e., not statisticians or scientists packing an extra brain), so fear not! Come on down, hoist a pint and learn something about how science gets done in the real world.
The Crepe Place, 1134 Soquel Ave, Santa Cruz. 8pm. Free. Dress warmly for the patio!
