This summer, the First Order Fresnel lens that guided ships to safety off the San Mateo coast will be lit as Pigeon Point briefly comes to life again. The big lens, with its 1008 hand-polished glass prisms, 1000-kw bulb and 24 beams of light, produces a half-million candlepower of light. As the lighthouse itself is under repair, the lighting will take place in the Visitor Center. Bring a flashlight, dress warmly, maybe bring some hot cider in a Thermos and join this special experience.
Pigeon Point Light Station SHP, 20 miles south of Half Moon Bay/30 miles north of Santa Cruz, Hwy 1. 8-9pm. Free.
