You've probably seen me around Santa Cruz County. I'm hard to miss wearing my day-glo yellow cycling jacket and my blue and white bicycle helmet—especially when I dash inside the grocery store, cafe and office supply store while sporting my bright commute wear.
I don't strive to be a bike geek; it just happens naturally. Since I aim to ride my bike most of the time instead of driving, wearing the hallmark safety garb of a cyclist is like slipping into a comfy pair of jeans—it just feels right.
This week I invite you to join me in celebrating Santa Cruz Bike Week, which continues through Saturday, May 11. And you don't have to wear my preferred cycling uniform; just check out the events coming up and consider riding your bike more often.
I don't usually wear a skirt made of bicycle tires and inner tubes, but Lauren Junker, founder of Totally Tublar, let me model her fun creation at the Museum of Art and History for the kickoff celebration of Bike Week on Friday, May 3. Photo credit: Arbor
Santa Cruz Bike Week is part of a larger movement that takes place throughout May: National Bike Month, which is celebrated in cities across the U.S. According to the US Census Bureau's 2010 American Community Survey, the share of Americans commuting by bike has grown by 47 percent since 2000. That's good news for Americans who want to reduce greenhouse gases that come from car emissions and for the perpetual struggle to burn more calories and shed unwanted pounds.
Cycling can make you healthier and happier and that's the focus I take in writing this new blog Bicycling for Santa Cruz for Hilltromper. I hope you will join me along the way by adding your comments, questions and your stories in the comments section, below.
