A unique feature of Quail Hollow Ranch in Santa Cruz, California, the dwarf redwood forest is a subject of some disagreement. Some scientists say they’re genetically distinct, some say they’re just young, others say this is what you get when you put redwoods on really poor soil, such as you find in proximity to the sandhills. It is nevertheless an odd sight: a thickly forested hilltop with miniature redwoods, which is to say they’re all under 30 feet tall, but otherwise look like mature coastal redwood trees.
