Editor's Note: Stuart is an awesome outdoorsman, excellent DJ, good friend and one of Hilltromper's first contributors! We're stoked about his newest travel guide, 'Moon Monterey and Carmel' (Moon Publishing; 296 pages; $17.99), published in December 2015. Come see him Thursday, Mar. 3 at 7pm at Bookshop Santa Cruz.

1) Santa Cruz County’s Sunset State Beach is an underrated place to pitch a tent and fall asleep while listening to crashing waves.

2) A detour to Corralitos is always worthwhile. The Corralitos Market & Sausage Company’s stellar Cheezy Bavarian sausage is complemented perfectly by a beer at the laid-back Corralitos Brewing Company Taproom.

3) Monterey and Moss Landing’s Fast Raft Ocean Safaris offers whale watching up close and personal without the noise and crowds of a typical whale watching vessel. (We love Fast Raft too, Stuart! Check out our blog and video about a Fast Raft expedition to see dolphins that battle sea monsters.)

4) Escape people on the trail by getting one of just 21 daily permits to hike around in Carmel’s Palo Corona Regional Park.

5) Nothing can recharge a person’s batteries like bathing in a night of silence at Big Sur’s New Camaldoli Hermitage.

Authors Stuart Thornton (Moon Monterey and Carmel) and Eric Henze (Complete Guide Wilder Ranch State Park and Complete Guide to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park) will read and sign books at Bookshop Santa Cruz on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at 7pm for "Plan Your Staycation."
