Arana Gulch Planting Day

Date:

Sat, 03/28/2015 - 09:00

When the handsome bridge depicted above went up as part of a multi-use trail through Arana Gulch, a lot of native plants were uprooted. Today the Resource Conservation District of Santa Cruz County, along with the city of Santa Cruz, the California Conservation Corps, Americorps, the Santa Cruz Harbor and Hilltromper, is sponsoring a planting day to repopulate the banks of Arana Creek and environs with sturdy native plants that stabilize the riparian corridor and feed native insects and birds.

We'll be putting in starts and bunches of beardless wild rye (a grass native to California), California wild rose (which is incredibly fragrant when in bloom) and California mugwort propagated by Central Coast Wilds from plants growing in other local riparian areas.

Hopefully we'll also have time to remove some of the peskier invasive species that have elbowed their way into Arana Gulch.

Not sure if you want to pitch in? Research says gardening's good for you! For this outing, wear long pants and sleeves and bring water and sun protection; RCD and friends will supply the coffee, snacks, tools and gloves. This work counts for community service hours.

Arana Gulch, on the north end of the Santa Cruz Harbor (end of Brommer Street). 9am. Free. Find it on a map of the Arana Gulch area.
