Big Basin Romance in the Redwoods Weekend

Date:

Sat, 02/14/2015 - 09:00

Show some love to our forests this Valentine's Day by hiking, crafting, clearing trails, and learning about the love lives of species at Big Basin Redwoods State Park! Park docents will be hosting five different activities on Saturday, Feb. 14, starting off the day at 9am with free coffee and hot chocolate at the visitor center fireplace. Warm up and wake up before setting off for romantic and earth-loving adventures in the redwoods!

From 9am - 12pm, join docent Kathy Willott for "Coffee Talk & Crafts" at the Sempervirens Room. In addition to more free hot chocolate and coffee, there will be kid-friendly crafts and conversation about Big Basin.

If you'd rather get to work under the redwoods, join the Big Basin Volunteer Trail Crew at 9am for a day of trail restoration. This trail crew has been meeting on second Saturdays since 1969, and trail volunteers of all experience levels welcome! Bring some work gloves, water, lunch, and some love for the redwoods and the trails that provide access to them!

At 10am, hikers will be setting off in search of rewarding romantic views of the Pacific from 1200 feet above Big Basin. Join docent Steve Stolper for this 4 hour (RT), 5 mile hike to Buzzard's Roost. Bring at least a liter of water and lunch. Rain cancels.

Want to explore Big Basin without the steep elevation gain? Docent naturalist Barry Grimm will be leading a moderately paced hike at 12 pm through some of the most photo-worthy trails in the park. Tailored to the interests and needs of whoever joins the hike, this exploration of trails less traveled will provide opportunities to see animals and plants that live at Big Basin. Bring water, snacks, and sturdy shoes. Rain cancels. This hike will also take place on Sunday, February 15, at 12pm.

How do the animals of Big Basin find love? Docent Paula Pierce will be leading a 2 hour walk and talk at 1pm about the dating and love habits of species in the park.

Meet at Park Headquarters, 21600 Big Basin Way, Boulder Creek, for all activities. Free, but parking is $10. Learn about the activities happening on Sunday, Feb. 15 here.
