Date:
Our friends at Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks have dubbed this informative open house “Luck O’ the Castros” for obvious marketing reasons, given the date. And as it happens they are taking the opportunity to tell an interesting happy-ending story regarding one of Santa Cruz County’s most significant historic buildings and the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989.
The Castro Adobe (California’s newest state park) is a must-see for anyone who enjoys local history, and the only way to see it is at events like this. Today will have a party atmosphere, with snacks prepared in the adobe’s newly restored cocina.
The event is free (donations accepted) and parking is limited.
Castro Adobe Open House: Romance on The Rancho
Date:
Sat, 02/20/2016 - 11:00
The Castro Adobe is one of the last, yet finest, rancho haciendas in the Monterey area. It stands hidden like a secret time portal back into the Rancho era of the Pajaro Valley. Soon to be our next State Park, it's currently closed—most of the time. Take advantage of it being open to the public during the upcoming Open House Days. Better yet, this year each day will be themed!
Today is Romance on the Rancho Day. Learn about attitudes toward intermarriage, courtship rituals and domestic life on the Rancho. Bring your honey to sip traditional hot chocolate and try homemade tortillas cooked on the bracero, or traditional stove, in the newly restored cocina, or kitchen. Or just show up and possibly find your dulcita! Tour the adobe and feel the romantic charm that bathed the Gold Rush era in California in this enchanting domicile that is being lovingly restored by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks. Watch the video:
Castro Adobe State Historic Park, 184 Old Adobe Rd, Watsonville. 11am-3pm. Free.
