A few years ago, after an effort to photograph his godson jumping into the pool yielded nothing but photos of the splash, Dan Tracy decided to get better at photography. A 25-year Central Coast resident and longtime high school English teacher, he threw himself into his new hobby with passion, taking classes and purchasing a schmancy DSLR. He soon discovered that he loves shooting wildlife and action. As he says on his website, "I love the surprises the the animals present to us and the often unexpected result that comes while shooting an athlete."
Tracy evidently has an aptitude for it. Last year he was honored with inclusion in the Audubon Magazine 100 Best Photo Awards for the hummingbird photo pictured here. (Look closely; that's actually two hummingbirds feeding at the same flower.) A show of Tracy's brilliant, arresting hummingbird images hangs through April 5 at the Main Street Garden & Cafe, 3101 N. Main, Soquel. An artist's reception is this evening, Wednesday, March 13, 5-6pm.
