Date:
Lighthouse Field State Beach is known as Point Santa Cruz as it forms the northern boundary of Monterey Bay. Visitors can enjoy plenty of recreational activities at one of the last open headlands in any California urban area. Rare black swift birds and wintering monarch butterflies are drawn to this area and migrate each winter to avoid freezing weather.
Volunteers will support habitat restoration of popular day use areas and trails by removing non-native vegetation. Together with California State Park Foundation, we will focus on removing Ice plant (Carpobrotus edulis), and Himalayan Blackberry (Rubus armeniacus). Hand tools such as hori horis, pulaskis, hand clippers, and loppers will be used to remove the weeds. Ages 8 and older welcome (minors must be accompanied by an adult and bring a signed waiver).
