Chances are you've heard of Nature Deficit Disorder, the term coined by author Richard Louv to describe a complex of childhood conditions, from obesity to depression, that he links to the fact that kids don't play outside anymore. Well, Nature Deficit Disorder is running home crying to its mommy today, because this outdoor recreation fair geared specifically to kids is bringing all its toys to the fairgrounds for a day of outside play.
With a helping hand from professional teachers and coaches, kids can have a go at a climbing wall, practice jumping up on a surfboard, try skateboarding, sit in a kayak, fling a disc golf, shoot a bow and arrow, even try their hand at fishing. Other activities include gardening, paddleboarding, biking, hiking and backpacking, sailing and equestrian events. Here at Hilltromper we are pea green with envy—and also really glad that kids today get a chance to try this stuff out. Check it out. It's free, it's fun, and it might make your kid happier and healthier for his or her entire life.
Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, 2601 E. Lake Ave, Watsonville. 10am-4pm. Free.
