The best way to celebrate National Estuaries Day (this is a no-brainer) is to visit your local estuary, such as the remarkable Elkhorn Slough Reserve. Join land stewards and researchers on walks through the reserve for an open house and native plant fair, where you can find inspiration for your garden and simply admire the stunning greenery. Kiddos can flock to the visitor center for crafts and everyone can take a closer look at the microscopic life on the reserve in their education lab. This is part of National Public Lands Day, so entrance to all national parks (like Pinnacles), national monuments, BLM lands and other places is free.
Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (1700 Elkhorn Rd., Watsonville). 9:30am-2pm. Free. Check out their website or call 831.728.2822 for more information.
