Nisene Marks 50th Anniversary Celebration

Date:

Sun, 05/19/2013 - 10:30

Fifty years ago the Marks family of Salinas deeded 9700 acres to the state parks system in honor of their matriarch Nisene, a devoted nature lover. Today the park celebrates 50 years of conservation with a big party and a special event: the inauguration of the Waggoner Overlook ADA trail, the park's first wheelchair-accessible trail. Cool, no? We think so too. Dignitaries and bagpipes (bagpipes!) mark the occasion with a procession and ribbon cutting starting at 10:30am.

At noon it's a living history lumberjack demonstration and a barbecue with burgers, hot dogs and more, plus a special kids zone with music, storytelling, face painting and crafts. All in all, a big bowl of fun in honor of one of Santa Cruz County's most beloved state parks. Co-sponsored by Advocates for the Forest of Nisene Marks and Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks. 11am-3pm. Forest of Nisene Marks State Park. Suggested donation: $3.
