While we're a tad miffed that Wild, the film adapation of Cheryl Strayed's bestselling memoir about her journey up the Pacific Crest Trail, was filmed in Oregon, we're still happy to see it here in Santa Cruz. It stars Reese Witherspoon, who (thanks to Legally Blonde) was once viewed as a ditz (the movie's actually pretty good) but has gone on to win Best Actress awards from the Academy and Golden Globes. Wild was directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, who made last year's powerful Dallas Buyers Club, (which justly received an Academy Awards Best Picture nomination). For this film Vallee chose to use only hand-held cameras and natural light. And: it costars the luminous Laura Dern. So the film has good bones. Even if California is played by Oregon.
