Panel Discussion: Mountain Biking on UCSC Trails

Date:

Wed, 11/20/2013 - 19:00

DUE TO THE STRIKE ON CAMPUS, THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED. MORE INFO SOON.

Although mountain biking on the trails at Upper UCSC is strictly illegal, it’s an open secret that lots of riders do it anyway and that enforcement is lax. In fact, lots of people swear these trails are the best in the county.

The trails’ illegal status raises a host of questions, like: Is it safe to allow a de facto recreation destination to exist in a legal gray area? Could emergency responders find their way amid unmarked trails? What is the university’s liability with the status quo, and how would it change if some of the trails were legalized? What are the environmental costs of this network, and how can they be mitigated? Would legal status make that easier?

Join Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz, Stevenson College Residential Life and Hilltromper as we open a conversation about the UCSC trails. Learn about the riders, environmentalists and administrators on the panel at Mountain Bike Access at UCSC: A Panel.

Stevenson Event Center, UCSC. Wed, Nov. 20, 7pm. Free.
