Stand up paddle boarders, kayakers, and waveskis (a sit-on-top surfboard of sorts) descend on Steamer Lane, Cowells, and the Cove to show the surfers a thing or two about creative wave riding during the three-day Santa Cruz Paddlefest. Often begrudged a spot in the line-up due to the wave catching edge that quick paddle strokes provide, these wily craft enjoy a rare moment to shine at the storied break. Grab a spot on West Cliff to check out the scene.
The event kicks off Friday at 7am and continues through the weekend. Elite paddlers test their mettle at Steamer Lane, racking up points against each other by throwing down dynamic carves, cartwheels, and loops. Intermediate level water men and women will be tossing spray further down The Lane at the Cowells Classic. On Friday the Covewater Surf City SUP Race, from Cowells Beach to the Harbor and back, tests open water skills. Events culminate in a Sunday afternoon showdown at Steamers.
West Cliff Drive from Steamer Lane to Cowells Beach, Santa Cruz. 7am-5pm. Free to watch. Register online. Google Map.
