Few animals are engrained in North American culture like the bald eagle. They decorate U.S. currency, are sacred to Native North American cultures and symbolize our country, peace and honor. The species was once prevalent along the California coast. But pesticides, hunting, and other human-induced threats severely depleted their numbers during the mid-19th century. Populations recovered after protective legislation and the DDT ban. The Predatory Bird Research Group, of which author and UCSC scientist Glenn Stewart is a coordinator, helped to re-establish bald eagle populations in Big Sur. Join Stewart as he discusses the history of the eagle’s recovery and where it stands today. Science Sunday lectures are designed to appeal to the general public.
Science Sunday lecture with Glenn R. Stewart. Seymour Marine Discovery Center, La Feliz room, 100 Shaffer Rd., Santa Cruz. 11/17, 1-3pm. Free with membership or UCSC student ID. 831.459.3800 for more information.
