We’ve already lost 10% of the world’s coral species, and may lose another 60% by 2065. Ever-acidifying waters deprive these marine invertebrates of the chemicals they need to build beautiful, calcified shells. But some corals are tougher than others. UCSC biogeochemist Adina Paytan studies a special group of corals off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, where submarine springs spout acidic water into the ocean. Paytan’s Mexican corals have adapted to the acidic environment. Can other species do the same? Join Paytan at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center as she describes her research in a fun, accessible format for the general public.
Science Sunday lecture with Adina Paytan. Seymour Marine Discovery Center, La Feliz room, 100 Shaffer Rd., Santa Cruz. 9/15, 1pm. Free with membership or UCSC student ID. 831.459.3800 for more information.
