Jeralean Talley is 113 years old and the oldest living American. Guess who else is 113 this year? Only the group responsible for lighting the spark that created the California State Parks system. Sempervirens Fund celebrates another turn around the sun with a picnic at Castle Rock State Park. A BBQ lunch, live music, a docent-led hike and games make up the entertainment for those who like their picnic experiences planted on terra firma. Others can get vertical with a rock climbing lesson from Adventure Out (two sessions, 1-2:30pm and 2:30-4pm; $35).
It couldn't be held at a better place. Castle Rock was slated for closure in 2012 because of state budget cuts; Sempervirens stepped in and formed an operating agreement with the state to keep it open for a year. That deal was recently extended to 2014 and possibly 2016. Sempervirens is also working on a capital improvement plan to spruce up Castle Rock's entrance in a big way.
Tickets for the picnic are $25 and can be purchased here. 11am-3pm, Castle Rock State Park.
