Talk: Open Space District and Nat'l Monument

Date:

Thu, 02/05/2015 - 18:30

It's an incredibly exciting time for wide-open spaces in Santa Cruz County, and tonight environmental champion Fred Keeley brings the 411 on two fascinating new initiatives.

One is the idea of an Open Space District for Santa Cruz County—something that would operate like the Mid-Peninsula Open Space District does over the hill, stepping into the gap between budget-challenged state and county parks systems to manage open spaces saved from development by conservation groups.

The other is the campaign to have Coast Dairies designated a national monument. This epically pretty patch of open space between Wilder Ranch and Swanton Road is the subject of the Santa Cruz Redwoods National Monument Campaign. A Feb. 12 campaign kickoff event with former Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt will be a great opportunity to learn more.

Tonight's talk is free and sponsored by Watsonville Wetlands Watch. RSVP here or by calling Kathy Fieberling: 831.345.1226
