Al Frisby is a wildflower guide like no other you'll ever know. The New Orleans-born raconteur, roots musician and amateur naturalist and photographer has a way of making any event into a party, and that goes for wildflower hikes. He knows his fleurs stone cold, and he's eager to share what he knows. For this excursion to the Waddell Valley (a.k.a. Rancho del Oso), part of the Big Basin State Park located about 17 miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1, meet at Kelly's on the westside, then carpool up.
Because this is a photography course as well as a wildflower tour, bring your camera. "Maybe bring the manual too, so you can make notes for yourself," says Al, "so not everything you learned will fade away."
Below find a couple of videos, one of Frisby on the O'Neill Yacht, where he entertains passengers on summer sunset cruises, and one of his short "Adventures With Al" videos featuring forget-me-nots (of which there are plenty in Waddell Valley).
Meet at Kelly's French Bakery, 402 Ingalls St, Santa Cruz. 10am. Suggested donation of $10. Please RSVP to aljfrisby@yahoo.com.
