Fungus Fair

Date:

Sat, 01/10/2015 - 10:30

Mushroom walks into a bar and orders a drink. Bartender looks at him and says, "We don't serve your kind here." Mushroom says, "Why not? I'm a fungi!"

Ah, mushroom humor. If you like that joke, you'll love the fungus funnies inspired at Santa Cruz's annual Fungus Fair. The Fungus Fair, which turns 40 this year, features hundreds of local mushroom species, complete with cooking demonstrations, talks by fungus specialists, and a Kids' Room with hands-on activities. Wild mushrooms are sold so you can take a taste of the fair home with you. Whether it's a pizza topping or a anti-cholesterol medicine, fungi have a special, figurative place in all of our hearts. Join us at the Fungus Fair and maybe meet a fungi!

Today, hear from Christian Schwartz on Frontiers in Fungal Ecology, from Zach Mazi on Mushrooms as Medicine, from Daniel Winkler on the mushrooms of Tibet, and from a handful of others, including Chef Bob Wynn, who has some things to say about pairing mushrooms with beer. Find the schedule here.
