Coastal Watershed Council

Monitoring Watershed Health Since 1995, the Coastal Watershed Council has been on a mission to preserve our coastal watersheds. The CWC's annual Snapshot Day, held the first Saturday in May, mobilizes "citizen-scientists" from all over the Monterey Bay region to gather water samples from each watershed that drains into Monterey Bay.

Ecological Concerns Incorporated

Design-Grow-Build. That’s the mantra of Ecological Concerns, Inc., a local ecological landscape and consulting firm that specializes in habitat restoration through the use of native plant species. From creek restoration and erosion control to invasive plant removal and drought-tolerant landscaping, ECI works on projects big and small to enhance biodiversity.

Ecological Farming Association

Sustainable Farming Experts Each January since 1971, the Ecological Farming Association has hosted the EcoFarm Conference. Drawing over 1,700 people from around the world, it's the largest farming conference on the West Coast, and the second largest in the United States. Held at the picturesque Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, the annual meeting involves workshops, networking, and sharing of the latest breakthroughs in farming, from technological practices and marketing to community organizing skills.

Friends of the Sea Otter

Otter Conservation Crusaders Sea otters begin life as tiny bundles of fur weighing three to five pounds and spend the next 10 to 15 years foraging for food, resting, grooming, traveling, and frolicking at the surface. Friends of the Sea Otter is a Monterey Bay-based organization that is committed to and advocates for the conservation of sea otters and the preservation of their habitat.

Homeless Garden Project

Training Stewards of the Land Trainees of the Homeless Garden Project learn how to become organic farmers by working the land at the HGP’s 3.5-acre farm and garden, located on the Westside of Santa Cruz. Volunteers also teach trainees how to craft organic flower wreaths, succulents, candles, and other products from the farm and garden, which are sold to help sustain the organization.

Island Conservation

Protecting The Most Vulnerable Extinction rates are exponentially greater on islands than on the mainland: Ninety-five percent of bird extinctions, 90 percent of reptile, 69 percent of mammal and 68 percent of plant extinctions occur on islands, where geographic limitations coupled with invaders can spell trouble for sensitive native species. Started in Santa Cruz by UCSC researchers in 1997, Island Conservation works on various island sites around the globe to prevent extinctions by removing invasive species from the islands.

Building Fresh Food Networks Since 1976 The Monterey Bay region is world renowned for its bountiful agricultural harvest, but it is also a leader in sustainable and organic food production. Since its beginnings in 1976, the Monterey Bay Certified Farmers Markets has used this serendipitous situation to its advantage, creating a thriving network between small family farmers and local communities.
